About Tamil
Tamil is one of the very few classical languages in the world spoken by approximately 80 million people globally and has one of the oldest literary and written traditions with traceable beginnings to over 4,500 years. Tamil literature represents a robust culture and tradition of a language and people providing a blueprint of human civilization. Tamil literature amounts to rich political and social history and has accorded with a prestigious recognition as one of the seven classic languages in the world, alongside Greek, Sanskrit, Latin, Hebrew, Persian, and Chinese. It holds official language status in Tamil Nadu in India, Sri Lanka, and Singapore, and has significant numbers of speakers in Malaysia, Mauritius, Fiji, and South Africa.
To reiterate, Tamil is an official language of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu, the sovereign nations of Sri Lanka and Singapore, and the Union Territory of Puducherry.
Tamil is a diglossic language, which means there is a large difference between the written form of the language and the spoken form. These differences include grammatical, vocabulary, and pronunciation differences. The literary form is considered prestigious, while the spoken from is used in informal settings by all social classes.
Tamil culture is deeply rooted in its language, and various art forms, including dance, music, and cinema, play pivotal roles in expressing Tamil identity. Classical dances like Bharatanatyam have origins in Tamil Nadu and are integral to Tamil cultural heritage. Tamil cuisine is renowned for its rich flavors, and traditional attire, like the saree for women and dhoti for men, reflects the cultural aesthetics.
In conclusion, Tamil is not just a language but a cultural treasure with a rich history and a vibrant present. Its influence extends beyond linguistic boundaries, making it an integral part of the cultural tapestry of South India and beyond.
